DESCRIPTION:

Thinking About Thinking is a one-day workshop on artificial intelligence for people working in dance and theatre. The day moves in one direction, from where these systems came from to what you can do with them. We start with the history: the long attempt to model thinking in a machine, and what the current generation actually is underneath the interface. Then the politics: who builds these models, who controls them, and what depending on them commits you to. Then the economics: what they cost, who is paying, and why the current price is not the real one.

The largest part of the day is practical — getting out of the mainstream way of using these tools, past the chat window, and building small pieces of software of your own. We work with agentic engineering — giving a model a job rather than a question with access to your files, the tools it needs, a memory of what it has already done, and the room to work through a task over many steps without being re-prompted at each one. . We use Claude Code, the tool Aldea runs its own workshops, website and administration on. Each participant leaves with a month of access to keep going.

The last part of the day is your own. You work on something you actually want to make — a score, an archive of your documentation, a website for a piece, a tool that handles the touring paperwork, a rehearsal companion, or something that has sat unmade because it looked like it needed a programmer. Individual work, with me in the room for the parts that get difficult. No coding experience is necessary.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

  • Bring a laptop, Mac or PC. It has to be a machine you can install software on, and you need its administrator password — a work laptop locked down by an IT department will not get you through the day.

  • Make two free accounts in advance if you can: GitHub (github.com) and Claude (claude.ai). Anyone who arrives without them, we sort it out on the spot.

  • Bring a project. The last part of the day is your own work, and it goes much better if people arrive with something specific they want to make or solve.

  • Nothing needs installing in advance, and no coding experience is required.

  • A month of Claude Code access is included for everyone.

Cameron MacLeod (b. 1975) is a Canadian artist based in Bergen and the director of Aldea — Center for Contemporary Art, Design and Technology. He makes functional technological devices and software systems — things that work — as a way of reviewing emerging technological trends and their relation to the socio-cultural paradigms they produce. He has exhibited at the Munch Museum and the National Museum in Oslo, Kunstnerforbundet, Kunsthall Stavanger, Performa, Blank Projects in Cape Town and the Banff Centre in Canada.

Much of that work has become infrastructure other artists use: The Custodian, a combined content-management and workflow system that ran the websites and administration of three Nordic art institutions, and Curatron, a peer-selection platform through which a community of artists chooses its own exhibitions rather than handing that decision to a curator or a committee. He founded Platform Stockholm in 2010 and Aldea in 2017, holds an MFA in Art in the Public Realm from Konstfack, and runs the daily administration of both organisations with the tools taught in this workshop.
